Huawei S7 Ready To Ship

huawei-s7-ship

The Huawei S7, a long-awaited and much anticipated MID/tablet PC is now finally ready to ship after months of delay and confusion. The shipping date has apparently been set as September the 6th of this year, and quite frankly the sooner the better. To refresh your memory, the Huawei S7 MID runs on the Google Android OS version 2.1, is powered by an impressive 768MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, even though previous reports had it clocked at 1GHz. Word has it won’t be particularly cheap, with a $360USD price attached.

HOTT’s 5-Inch MID Stocking Shelves

hott-md500

The HOTT MD500 should now be starting to stock shelves, according to imp3, after months of hype and promotion. To refresh your memory, the HOTT MD500 is a fairly unremarkable 5-inch MID that is set to run Google Android 1.5 - a surefire hint that inside it houses the Rockchip Rk2808 chip. Another surefire hint is that the MID is capable of decoding up to 720p videos, which is the limit of the 2808 chip. The firmware is looking to be slightly customised with preloaded apps such as QQ. All in all, nothing to get terribly excited over, though it does add another MID into the 5-inch range which is a welcome addition. It, however, is not selling for particularly cheap with a 899 Yuan price point attached which will no doubt be inflated when sold overseas. The RAmos W7 is a better choice.

Gadmei P82 & US-P82: 8-Inch Monsters

gadmei-p82

Looks like two more 8-inchers is coming to town, the Gadmei P82 and the US-P82. Both players run a very impressive resolution of 1280x768. The P82 will be 720p capable PMP while the US-P82 will be the ‘big brother’ and 1080p capable. Quite frankly, at this screen resolution both are bound to look gorgeous. One can only hope for a good screen with vibrant colours. Viewing angles are expected to be poor on this behemoth. More info as it comes in.

New SmartQ Tablet: T7 / T7-3G

New SmartQ Tablet: T7 / T7-3G

smartq-t7

SmartQ are coming out with a new tablet/MID (the 7-inch range really is the no-man’s-land for this distinction), the successor to the SmartQ R7 and this time it’s called the T7. Can’t say the naming is creative but it is certainly straight forward. The SmartQ T7 is coming in 2 models: 3G enabled and not (T7-3G and T7 respectively.) Both the 3G and non-3G model have WiFi connectivity. This devices packs a 7-inch screen and runs on Android OS version 2.1 (which is nice) and will be able to decode videos of up to 1080p which extends the versatility of this MID/tablet even further. The SmartQ T7 also packs a 4500mAh battery *phew* which should provide this device with some impressive battery life times. Even snazzier is that it is being said that the 3G version will be able to send text messages and duplicate some phone function. More as it comes in.

Cowon’s New Player/MID: The V5W

Cowon’s New Player/MID: The V5W

cowon-v5w

Cowon are releasing a new PMP/MID, the V5W likely the successor to the V5. This player is fully 1080p capable, WiFi connectable and runs on WinCE 6.0 (like their previous player) and it seems to sport a similar UI to their previous iteration. The UI does indeed look good. The Cowon V5W packs a 4.8-inch 800x480 touchscreen, has HDMI out, several dictionaries, an e-book reader, email and weather apps, games as well as an ‘Office’ suite. The lines blur between MID and PMP again with this player and that is a thoroughly welcome direction for advancement. The Cowon V5W will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavours.  The V5W weighs in at 197g and measures in at 128x82x15.7mm.

BenQ’s S6 MID

BenQ’s S6 MID

benq-s6-mid

BenQ’s S6 MID is entering the fray at the 4.8-inch size with a resistive touchscreen for added stylus input support. The BenQ S6, which will come with a built-in Unicom 3G module (to allow for SIM cards), will be powered by the Intel Atom Z500 processor clocked at 800MHz, will feature 512MB DDR2 RAM, pack an 8GB SSD hard disk, come with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, and sport a 1800mAh battery for ‘2-3 hours’ of battery life. Phew. It will also run on the Windows XP Home operating system by default. All in all, an interesting offering from BenQ, certainly more geared toward a defined use rather than just casual web browsing.

It’s really quite thick, though, measuring in at 158mm x 90mm x 22mm and weighing in at 370g (apparently).

Snazzy Dual-Display E-Reader: Hanvon T61

hanvon-t61-1

Even though the Hanvon T61 e-reader pictured above is just a rebranding of a fairly generic e-reader technology, the dual-display does make for an interesting concept. I can’t really think of much use the dual-display serves other than to boost up the price of this e-reader, and to provide superfluous functionality that nobody would really use. Aside from that, the second screen makes the reader a lot larger, with the first screen being sized 6-inches (800×600) and the second being sized 3.5-inches (320×480). The first screen uses an E-Ink panel, as seen on many other e-readers, while the second is a colour touchscreen. I suppose the second screen does allow for easier navigation of books while in a book, but one can’t help but feel that this second screen is largely useless, draining battery life and offering limited extra functionality. The device runs on Android and is not generally recommended.

Expand 3G Tablet.MID

Expand 3G Tablet.MID

expand-tablet-2

This device from Shenzhen manufacturer Expand is a 7-inch (800×480) MID/tablet that is powered by a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor paired with the VIA VX700 Chipset. It comes with 16GB of RAM as well as a 16GB SSD hard drive and a 2500mAh battery. The tablet, though, will run on Windows XP which differentiates it from the barrage of Android and WindowsCE tablets and MIDs that have bombarded the market in recent times. The device will also have a built in 3G module, as well as WiFi connectivity and the works. All in all, an interesting if slightly underwhelming entry to the market.

Yet Another Android Tablet: ezGear Surfboard

ezgear-surfboard-700

Ludicrous and thoroughly unattractive name aside, this is another Android tablet offering, a 7-inch 800×480 device. One interesting thing though is that according to the ezGear website, this tablet runs on Android 2.1 and is powered by the Rockchip RK2818 chip, rather than the more popular RK2808 which can only handle Android 1.5. That certainly is intriguing and hopefully promises a better experience than the myriad RK2808 tablets on the market today. Other standard features include WiFi, HDMI out and a TF card expansion slot. No word on price yet.

But why would they even call it a surfboard? Yeah, cowabunga…

Coby MP620 reminiscent of Zune original

Coby MP620 reminiscent of Zune original

Who could ever forget Microsoft’s flagship Zune original media player? Well, apparently the folks over at Coby can’t get it out of their heads after the company revealed it’s new Coby MP620 PMP.

The new player is being marketed as a cheaper alternative to the iPod nano with its audio and video capabilities. While it has an initial appearance of a Zune, it’s dimensions and design bring it more inline with the nano.

The device packs a nifty 1.8-inch LCD display, but no word on a pair of matching speakers. The device will be available in both 4GB and 8GB flavors packing an FM tuner (and a host of other features).

Available in black, red or blue, the player will retail for just $29.55 or $43.05 for the 4GB and 8GB respectively. Eat your heart out, Apple.

Musician MID - Android & WinCE

Musician MID - Android & WinCE

mid-musican

These Musician brand MIDs are able to double boot into both Android 2.1 (which is quite nice) and WinCE 6.0, a ‘feature’ we have been seeing more and more in recent times. This MID is powered by the Telechips 8902B processor, clocked at 720MHz and ultimately based on ARM 11 tech. The device itself packs a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280×768, which is certainly refreshingly high, has 256MB DDR2 RAM, WiFi and 3G connectivity, and HDMI 1.3 output. All in all, this small MID looks very promising.

Cube H500FHD Availability Imminent

cube-h500fhd

The Cube H500FHD, first announced in May, is coming into full bloom now with mass availability expected immediately, if not already. The Cube H500FHD is a 5-inch player which houses the Boxchip F10 which is the Sochip SC9800 in disguise, so you can expect excellent video playback capability at full 1080p HD (and up to 1280p - 1920 x 1280 resolution) and good battery life. The file format support will be extensive, ranging from WMV to MKV to AVI and MP4 - file format support is really another area where the Sochip excels. Models will first start appearing in 8GB flavour.

itoos M9HD Launched

itoos M9HD Launched

itoos-m9hd

itoos have launched the M9HD, a new button-operated player with a 5-inch 800x480 WVGA screen. The player is being marketed as supporting up to 1280p, as you can see in the picture above, a telling tactic as this means it most likely is a Sochip SC9800 player which is currently the only chip on the market which can use such resolution-marketing tactics. What this means is that the player can supposedly play up to 1980x1280 video resolution. Since the M9HD uses the Sochip (we guess), file format support will be excellent ranging from RMVB/RM to WMV and MKV and all the usual suspects in between. In addition, the player will have OTG functionality, come with a remote control, be able to read PDF files and apparently has up to 6.5 hours of battery life (take that with a grain of salt.)

All in all, a promising, if not now-generic player.

Some Microsoft related file types (docx, emz and mdi)

The MDI file type is mainly related with 'Office' by Microsoft Corporation. The MDI is a a high resolution, tag-based graphics format. MDI files are only supported by the Microsoft Office 2003 version of Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Microsoft Office Document Imaging uses Microsoft Document Imaging Format (MDI), a file format based on the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) that is designed to store images by page layout. Both formats (MDI and TIFF) are capable of storing text recognized by optical character recognition (OCR) along with images and using this OCR may be turned into a Word (.DOC) document.
In general, images that are saved in the MDI file format take up less disk space than the same images saved as TIFF files. The image quality of an image saved in the MDI file format is comparable to that of the same image saved in TIFF.

The DOCX file type is also mainly related with 'Word' by Microsoft Corporation. This is the new format for Microsoft Office documents (2007). It is a combination of XML architecture and ZIP compression for size reduction. It's a completely open standards based file format; contains document text, images, formatting, styles, drawn objects, and other document settings; commonly used to author documents in business and academic settings.
Changing docx documents into other formats is very easy if you know how, or have the correct docx converter software. Converting docx to the older doc format used by Microsoft Word or to Adobe’s pdf format is possible, offering better compatibility with partners and colleagues. DOCX files are designed to make document contents accessible; for example, document text is saved using plain text files and document images are saved as individual image files within the DOCX file.
Docx isn’t just qualified to use on a Windows based computer, other operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS X also include software or filters allowing users to share information thru the docx Office Open XML format.

Compressed image file used by Microsoft programs such as Visio and the Office suite; contains an Enhanced Metafile (.EMF file) that has been compressed with the .GZIP compression algorithm. The EMF file type is a type of image file incorporating a recorded sequence of Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface) graphics functions and is the successor to the older WMF (Windows Metafile) format. The GDI is a set of functions for Windows programmers that supplies basic drawing functionality, and anything that can be drawn with the GDI functions can be saved to an EMF file with very little attempt.
EMZ files are simply EMF files that have been compressed using the extremely common GZIP type compression and so they can simply be decompressed prior to viewing by any compression/archive software package with support for GZIP. For example, changing the extension to .GZ will often enable you to use software such as WinZip or WinRar to extract the EMF files. Sometimes the files holded in the EMZ might have their extension replaced to EM upon extraction. In these cases, adding the missing F on to the file extension is all that is needed to open the files.
