Samsung unveils new R1 multimedia player

Samsung unveils new R1 multimedia player

Samsung has unveiled a new multimedia player called the R1 that boasts some nice specifications that media fans will appreciate. The R1 is hailed as the slimmest and lightest multimedia player around that is compatible with DivX.

samsungbeat

DivX compatibility means that users can transfer most media files without needing to convert them. The R1 is only 8.9mm thick and weighs 50g. Samsung says that the device is thin and light enough that users can carry it around inside their wallet.

Despite its small size the device sports a 2.6-inch touchscreen and uses the Samsung exclusive TouchWiz user interface. Loading music and other files onto the device is a drag and drop proposition and the R1 uses Samsung’s DNEs 3.0 sound engine for natural sound processing.

The device also features a Beat DJ feature that allows the user to add their own voice and sound effects to their favorite songs and users can scratch records on the screen to create personalized music. Samsung will offer the R1 with 8GB or 16GB of storage and it will launch in Europe in September with other markets to follow later.

Zii EGG, first impressions

Zii EGG, first impressions

Zii EGG, first impressions

Now that Creative is shipping the Zii EGG, the first impressions are being posted online. So, hot or not?

'The screen on the Zii EGG compares very favorably with the Sony's OLED (shown above), though the blacks certainly aren't as intense. It's shockingly bright, and colors are very vibrant and 'alive'. The built-in speakers are about on par with those on my Zen X-Fi, though not quite as good as the one's on my Sony NWZ-S545 (also pictured) - IMO.'

'Remember that the Zii EGG/DE is not a retail/consumer product and is very 'rough around the edges', but one thing that I'm really happy about is that the player sounds better than ANY Creative DAP/PMP since the Zen MicroPhoto. I'll even go so far as to say that it's the best sounding Creative player I've ever heard, and that's without any EQ/Z-Fi etc.'

Ok, I thought that PMP makers had master audio quality, but apparently, it is still a hot topic for some. In the video (full post), the Zii Egg takes about 1mn to boot, and the user interface seems to be fluid, which is always a good sign, but there was no 3D demo. Web browsing experience looks on par with Android, but not as good as an iPod touch.

On Nike Aneca C-32 MP3 Player With Retro Stylings

c32

When a new MP3 player comes out of China there’s a pretty safe bet it’s going to be Apple ‘inspired’. That’s why the On Nike C-32, which looks like the love-child of an Atari 2600 and a Duracell battery, is so strangely refreshing.

Audio support includes MP3, WMA and APE and FLAC Lossless formats, all played through a variety of EQs.

The 1.1 inch OLED screen running at 128 x 64 resolution isn’t quite the ideal for the text reader capabilities but the phone book feature, measurements of 66 x 28 x 11mm and 2GB storage all compliment the 139 Yuan ($20) price tag.

USB Cassette MP3 Player

USB Cassette MP3 Player

USB Cassette MP3 Player

Now here's one confused device - the USB Cassette MP3 Player. It looks like your regular ancient plastic cassette, and is sized the same, making it able to fit into your vehicle's cassette deck (if you still have one, that is) for easy portability, although it features an SD memory card slot that holds all your songs in flash memory format. Files are easily transferred using drag-and-drop methodology from a computer, so its memory size is limited by the size of your SD memory card. If you love getting weird looks from people with this special MP3 player, then be prepared to fork out $22 for this puppy. All the relevant buttons to control audio playback and volume are lined up on one side of the device.

Tsinghua PMC-1200 Talking E-Book Reader And PMP

tsing

Billed as an e-book reader, the Chinese Tsinghua Tongfang PMC-1200 not only has a pretty nifty 7 inch, 16 million colour LTPS LCD screen but also is happy to read to you and play movies on its more than adequate MP4 specs.

The screen runs at 800 x 480 pixels which should be easy on the eye for reading e-books and text. The reader also supports PDF, PPT, Word documents and other popular formats.

If you’re fed up of reading then Microsoft’s live reading technology is on hand to read to you in a variety of male and female robotic voices at the push of a button.

On top of these is MP3/MP4 playback, games, FM radio, TV-OUT, a remote control, a clock, a calendar and an alarm clock for the unspecified price on the as yet unrevealed release date.

JXD1000 MP6 Player: Cheapest PSP Clone Ever

jxd1000

I’m not sure if $90 is a cheap PSP clone for you but it sure is the cheapest I’ve heard about. It’s got good specs like 720p support, direct playback for DVD not to mention multiple video format support (RMVB/RM, AVI, VOB, DAT, MPG, FLV), a 2.0 MP camera and the all important games support, which includes NES, GBA, GBC, SMD and SFC. It also has a voice recorder, TV out and FM tuner. I also happen to like the 8GB built-in. The JXD1000 gets cheaper the more quantities you buy from the link below.

I got my RAmos T11RK - first impressions

180008

My sample of the T11RK landed on my lap early this morning, i was quite excited all night and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.

Now does this player live upto the hype? Well i have been using it for a good 3 hours now and for the most part it is indeed a very nice player, it is off course not perfect there are some bugs in the software (but not that many) and some of the hardware choices that RAmos made could have been better.

Let me just do a quick run down on the hardware. Overall the player is well built, the front frame, although made to look like metal, is infact just plastic with silver paint. The back is also plastic and has RAmos new mumumusic logo engraved all over it, not that bad looking actually.

The player has a nice weight about it, not that heavy and it doesn’t feel cheap. The T11RK has a 5.0″ high res screen, capable of 800 x 480 resolution, however they seem to be using the same screen as they did the T12, so colors on this screen look a little washed out and the screen has the same viewing angle issues, in particular when viewing from down, images look particularly dark, the best viewing angle for this screen is either directly in front or looking from the top.

The touch screen is resistive, but it doesn’t really matter as the responsiveness from the screen is quite good, actually its surprisingly good, BUT, for whatever reason, RAmos choose to use a plastic screen, this causes a bit of a problem when moving your finger across it as there seems to be too much grip making it hard to smoothly move your finger across. Needless to say that this does cause issues with the navigation. I do think the finger grip issue is something that will subside over time as the screen gets more worn in and i myself become more accustomed to touch screen responsiveness and sensitivity. Overall though i think the touch screen has been well implemented, i don’t think i have seen such a nice touch screen/UI interaction on a Chinese MP4 player since the S:Flo.

One smart thing i found on the player is where the IR remote is placed, its located on the bottom edge of the player, at first i thought this was pretty stupid, i mean why would you put the port there when the player would have to be held at an angle if a person was watching a movie on it, making the port hard to be in direct line of sight with the remote. Then it hit me, its the first player thats had the port in the right place, as the remote it meant to be used while the players TV out is being used. Unlike other players which have the port in the front and would need to be stood up for the IR remote to work when your sitting on the sofa, the T11Rk can just be easily laid flat on a table with the IR port facing your sofa. Ok i know, its not a huge deal, but i thought it was nice of RAmos to actually think that through.

Software:

The UI is very well made, its not perfect and for the most part, its nothing that we have not seen on other Chinese players, just this UI is more slick with a few added bells and whistles.

The UI is smooth and the player loads very fast, almost under 5 seconds. The icons are the nicest, but considering it is a Rockchip player, retheming this shouldn’t be the hardest thing to do.

The player does allow for dynamic/kinetic scrolling, like that on the S:Flo, the only problem here is the grip issue with the screen, this can hamper your finger interaction with the scrolling.

Video playback is very much like that on the T12, it supports very high resolution videos and i even tested out some of the MKV that Chimo had posted, some worked perfectly, others played with a little jerkyness, others with a lot and one very high res MKV file wouldn’t even open. AVI high res playback is same as that of CC1600 players and the same for RMVB playback.

One nice feature when viewing a video is that you can pull up an on screen menu (while the video is playing) and scrolling through your other video files and choose to watch another video file from there, so no need to jump back a menu if you want to change vids. Also any videos that you stopped watching halfway will have a little thumbnail image showing where you left off, this image is shown on the on screen menu, i thought this was quite cool. The time bar can also be slid or you can just pick a point on it and the video will jump to that spot (yes i know this isn’t anything new, but many touch screen players sometimes don’t have this feature).

The music player is quite standard, capable of sorting music, showing album art and all your standard EQ that you would expect on a Rockchip player. I did find that after i load quite a few songs on the player, the players update process to read through and sort the ID3 tags was super quick, i hope this wasn’t just a fluke and this is how it should be. There is a type of cover flow, it is nicely implemented, i think the video review would probably best explain this feature.

All the other features are pretty standard, for eBook scrolling through pages is very smooth, in the image viewing you can use your finger to slide to the nest or previous image and this too also have a quick on screen menu to scroll through you image files without having to go back a menu (again this will be better explained with a video review).

Overall its a nice player, its not revolutionary, but it certainly is very fun and doesn’t disappoint. The firmware still has bugs, it is easy to confuse the touch screen at times, but it is a solid, good player that many people will like.

onda

Looking to take the place of its older brothers is the Onda VX898C, a 4GB MP3 player that has been tweaked in every area to fit nicely in mp3 player sized slot in the market.

A 128 x 64 resolution 1 inch colour screen replaces the old monochrome version of old with a new user-geared UI.

Ergonomics have been worked on to make it fit snugly in the hand, the width is down 20% to 10mm and it now weighs 20 grams.

The VX898C also has a multi-band EQ with presets, FM radio with a recorder, a voice recorder, an e-book reader (although it’s not really the screen for it, right?) and lyrics display.

Charge is a respectable 20 hours of play and it can be charged easily via USB2.0.

The 4GB player also comes at the nice price of around $30 but is only available in China.

Archos Android MIDs A5S and A5H revealed in FCC filing

Archos’ upcoming Android MID has been prematurely outed by the FCC, ahead of its expected launch on September 15th.  The Archos A5S (model 7501) Internet Media Tablet - a second, sibling device, the A5H (model 7502) was also mentioned in the user guide - bears a strong resemblance to the company’s existing Archos 5, has a 5-inch (or possibly 4.8-inch) touchscreen display and includes WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and an FM transmitter/receiver.

archos android internet tablet a5s 7 540x314

There’s also talk - in the user manual at least - of integrated 3G data connectivity, though the FCC do not mention it as part of their A5S testing.  It’s possible that 3G WWAN is reserved for the A5H 7502.  As for wired connectivity, there’s a microSD card slot and a microUSB port, together with some sort of docking connector.

Only one image of the Archos Android tablet powered on is shown, but that seems to indicate that the company have crafted their own custom UI on top of the Google OS.  Unfortunately the image isn’t clear enough to fully make out all the details, so we may have to wait until September 15th to find out exactly what Archos have in store.

Samsung YP-R1 PMP Unboxed and a Review

Samsung YP-R1 PMP Unboxed and a Review

samsung-r1-unboxing

Moveplayer in Korea has first dibs on the Samsung YP-R1. They’ve been sent a live one and they enthusiastically peeled off the packaging and take photos of the dirty business. It’s got a tiny form factor (see photo below) that will suit people looking for a pocket-friendly PMP. That’s why Samsung is only giving us 2.7 inches of display space instead of the more common 3 inches. Moveplayer says the Samsung R1 GUI is pretty sleek. It plays unencoded 720 x 480 videos.

It’s a tightly designed PMP with a highly usable touchscreen user interface. The video below exhibits the touchscreen responsiveness.

It’s a good player design-wise and the multi-media aspect seems fairly adequate, but maybe they could downgrade the price a little bit to something closer to $150 for the 8GB.

Moveplayer has a thorough review of this elegant new player from Samsung, which will go for $180 with an 8GB memory.

While other high-def PMPs have taken to supporting 720p, Cube want to up the ante to 1080i. Now, for the crucial question: do we really need our media players to have 1080i support? Ainol announces V8000HD PMPs with HDMI, h.264 support

Well, well... it looks like Microsoft isn't the only company overhauling, upgrading, and generally 'swankifying' its handheld devices. We just received a dispatch from iMP3.net detailing the new V8000HD line from Ainol and, while we doubt we'll be seeing one of these guys in the States any time soon, they do manage to pack a lot in a little package. Available in three flavors, the V8000HDA(4.3-inch / 800 x 480), V8000HDB (4.3-inch / 480 x 272), and V8000HDG (5-inch / 800 x 480) are being billed as PVPs (Portable Video Players) -- because, you know, there aren't enough arbitrary product categories out there as it is. According to the company, the PVP concept centers around full support for the H.264 codec (up to 1280 x 720), HDMI output (in addition to your standard component and A/V outs), and hi-def audio support. Also included is a USB port for access to external storage. No word on prices or release date, but we'll keep you posted. In the meantime, feel free to feast your eyes on some Chinese-language PR in the gallery below.

Newman is not the most fashionable manufacturers of PMPs, but they do try to give us everything that we need in the specs side. Now, they’re on the HD bandwagon with the all-new Newsmy A8HD. The 4.8-inch touchscreen only supports 480 x 272 pixels but with video output, you can view 720p videos. There’s 8GB of storage and dual speakers. No pricing yet, though.

Zune HD video hands-on: chock-full of media edition

We've witnessed a very interesting development cycle with the Zune HD, getting to witness the software at various early stages of development, instead of a completed device all at once. Our latest glimpse of the player is along the lines of what's been cropping up the last week or so: wild transitions, fun motion graphics and plenty of beautiful media to show it all off with. We did get to touch the new keyboard briefly, and while there's no telling what sort of predictive text Microsoft has worked in, since we only had a URL bar to work with, it's a passable (and certainly beautiful) attempt to cram a full QWERTY touchscreen keyboard into such a small device. Reports are conflicting as to whether there will be a landscape keyboard in the final build of the device, but it's been spotted in some iterations of the device -- it didn't show up when we tried to rotate the player, however.

Unfortunately, while the browser is up and running, the hotel we were at wasn't able to offer us a working internet connection -- hopefully we'll be able to rectify that soon. For now hold tight, check out the gallery below and the peep the video after the break for a magical exploration of the Zune HD's truly impressive interface.
